Research on the Religious Freedom Trails app begain in 2023 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional funding was provided Philadelphia Funders Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial in 2025 to develop the app. The project is directed by David M. Krueger, Ph.D. scholar of American religious history and executive director of the Dialogue Institute. Technical aspects of the project are directed by Sayge Martin.
